Sinus Lift: When Bone Grafting Is Needed Before Dental Implants

30.4.2026 · Dr. Stanislav Ozarchuk · 2 Min. Lesezeit

Learn what sinus lift surgery involves and when it is required before dental implant placement. Explore open vs. closed techniques and bone graft materials used in modern dentistry.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also known as sinus floor elevation, is a surgical procedure that raises the sinus membrane and fills the space beneath it with bone graft material. This procedure is essential when a patient lacks sufficient bone height in the upper jaw to safely support a dental implant.

At Premium Dental Boutique in Warsaw, Dr. Stanislav Ozarchuk performs sinus lift procedures using state-of-the-art techniques, ensuring minimal invasiveness and maximum patient comfort.

When Is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

The procedure is indicated in the following situations:

  • Bone atrophy — after prolonged tooth loss, the jawbone resorbs and its height drops below 8 mm, making stable implant placement impossible.
  • Natural anatomy — some patients have a naturally low sinus floor, limiting the available bone height for implant placement.
  • Trauma or periodontal disease — inflammatory conditions can accelerate bone loss in the lateral maxilla.
  • Planned implantation in the posterior maxilla — primarily affecting premolars and molars (positions 4–8) in the upper jaw.

Open vs. Closed Technique

Open Sinus Lift (Lateral Approach)

Used when bone height is less than 4–5 mm. The surgeon creates a small window in the lateral sinus wall, gently elevates the Schneiderian membrane, and fills the space with bone graft material. This technique allows for significant augmentation — up to 8–10 mm of additional bone height.

Closed Sinus Lift (Crestal Approach)

Used when bone height is 5–7 mm. Access is gained through the implant osteotomy site via the alveolar ridge. This is a less invasive method with shorter healing time, though it allows for a smaller bone gain — typically 2–4 mm.

Bone Graft Materials

At Premium Dental Boutique, we use the highest-quality bone graft materials:

  • Autogenous bone — harvested from the patient (e.g., from the mandible), providing the best biocompatibility and osteogenic potential.
  • Xenograft (Bio-Oss) — processed animal-derived material that integrates excellently with the patient's bone over time.
  • Alloplast — synthetic bone material (e.g., hydroxyapatite, beta-TCP), predictable and safe for augmentation.
  • Allograft — freeze-dried human donor bone, subjected to rigorous processing and sterilization protocols.

Procedure and Recovery

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes 40 to 90 minutes, depending on the chosen technique. Post-operatively, patients may experience mild swelling and discomfort for 3–5 days.

Key post-operative guidelines:

  • Avoid blowing your nose for 2 weeks.
  • Sneeze with your mouth open to prevent sinus pressure.
  • Take prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication as directed.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for 7–10 days.
  • Maintain a soft diet for the first 3–5 days.

The healing and bone integration period typically takes 4–6 months, after which implant placement can proceed. In select cases using the closed technique, the implant may be placed simultaneously with the sinus lift.
