Sinus Lift
Elevation of maxillary sinus floor for implantation
Service overview
Sinus Lift
A sinus lift is a surgical procedure in which the membrane lining the floor of the maxillary sinus is gently elevated and the created space is filled with bone graft material. This builds sufficient bone volume in the back of the upper jaw to place dental implants safely and securely. Depending on the anatomy, the procedure is performed using the open (lateral window) technique or the closed (crestal) technique through the prepared implant site.
Who benefits
Ideal candidates for this treatment
The procedure is intended for patients planning implants in the back of the upper jaw whose bone has resorbed after tooth loss, or whose maxillary sinus naturally sits low. The choice between the open and closed technique is made by the surgeon based on a CBCT scan and your individual anatomy.
When needed
Clinical indications
- Insufficient bone height in the back of the upper jaw before implant placement
- Bone resorption after upper teeth lost long ago
- Naturally low position of the maxillary sinus floor
- Planned implants in the upper molar and premolar area
- Preparation for full restoration of the upper jaw
Treatment path
Treatment stages
- 1
CBCT diagnostics
3D cone-beam imaging precisely measures bone height, the position of the sinus floor and the condition of the membrane
- 2
Treatment planning
Choice of open or closed technique, selection of graft material and scheduling of implant placement
- 3
Sinus lift procedure
Gentle elevation of the sinus membrane and placement of the graft material under local anesthesia - via the open or closed approach
- 4
Healing and integration
The graft material remodels into the patient's own bone, typically over several months
- 5
Implant placement
With sufficient bone the implant can be placed at the same visit; otherwise it is placed after healing is complete
